HYROX is reaching a point where 15 athletes in Elite fields is simply too restrictive, especially under the new points-based ranking system.
As depth continues to increase, we’re likely to see more situations where top-level professionals miss out on Elite starts despite being fully competitive — sometimes beaten by athletes who qualify through race selection, or system incentives rather than clear performance superiority. That’s not a criticism of athletes; it’s a structural reality of a shallow cutoff.
Legacy qualification has to exist
From a fan perspective, it’s disappointing when recent world champions are not guaranteed a place on the Worlds start list. In any professional sport, champions should be protected — not exempt from performance standards, but structurally recognised within the qualification system.
A simple solution would be legacy auto-qualification for past World Champions (e.g. 2–3 seasons), combined with a proof-of-fitness or minimum ranking requirement. Injury happens, careers ebb and flow, but champions should not disappear from the biggest stage due to ranking volatility alone.

Elite 15 + legacy spots makes the cutoff even tighter
If HYROX adds legacy spots while keeping Elite 15 unchanged, qualification actually becomes harder for non-champions. Suddenly you’re fighting over 12–13 available slots in a field deeper than ever.
That’s not sustainable.
A practical alternative: Elite 15A / Elite 15B
If an Elite 25 is too large for current pro-wave formats (e.g. standardized 200 m run tracks), there’s a compelling alternative:
- Elite 15A and Elite 15B
- Two separate waves
- Points awarded to both (with A weighted slightly higher)
- Winner of the Elite 15B race auto-qualifies for the Elite 15A race at the following Major
This adds:
- upward mobility
- clear incentives
- genuine drama to the B race
- more elite opportunities without diluting prestige

The bigger picture
This isn’t about lowering standards. It’s about acknowledging that the sport has evolved faster than its competitive structure. With deeper fields and a points-driven ranking system, Elite 15 is no longer wide enough to fairly represent the top end of the sport.
HYROX is very close to having a world-class qualification system. Expanding elite access slightly, protecting champions and adding a Strength of Field Factor to Standard races would make this system fair and objective for years to come.
